The Crisis: What’s Happening in the Rohingya Camps?

Heavy monsoon rains have turned the world’s largest refugee camp into a disaster zone.
Since late May 2025, relentless downpours have caused catastrophic flooding and many landslides across camps in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. More than 1,400 shelters have been destroyed or severely damaged, forcing families—many with children and elderly—to flee with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

Access to clean water is now a daily struggle. Floodwaters have contaminated wells and latrines, increasing the risk of deadly waterborne diseases. Families are crammed into makeshift shelters or exposed to the elements, with little food or protection from the ongoing rains.

The situation is life-threatening and urgent. Reports from the ground show that overcrowding, displacement, and the destruction of critical infrastructure have left thousands of people—especially children, women, and the elderly—at risk of malnutrition, disease, and further tragedy.
